Biography

Dr. Jazmine I. Benjamin is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Nephrology and Hypertension at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. She holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Jazmine's unique career path combines her interests in biomedical science, public policy, and public health. Jazmine is also an inaugural Howard Garrison Fellow with the Federation for American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).

Jazmine is immensely passionate about science communication and advocacy. With her extensive speaking experience, she has led seminars about various topics ranging from the hidden curriculum in academia to getting started in science policy and advocacy. Locally, Jazmine was highly active in her alma mater's community. She served as the graduate student body President from 2020-2022. Her work on campus earned her a spot in the UAB Ever Faithful 50, the 2021 Student Excellence Award for Inclusive Campus Commitment, and the 2022 Blazer Way Award.

Jazmine has a strong dedication to and passion for bridging translational research and its policy implications. Jazmine is also a staunch advocate for the representation and equitable treatment of Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color in STEM.

Outside of the lab, Jazmine enjoys cooking, the outdoors, and playing video games. She also has an adopted sprollie (spaniel/border collie mix) named Cersei, who keeps her laughing and active.

  • Jazmine is beginning as a postdoctoral research fellow at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the fall of 2023.

  • Jazmine was selected as a member of the inaugural class of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Howard Garrison Advocacy Fellows. The fellowship is a 10-month appointment that includes instruction in advocacy, science policy, science communications, leadership development, and career exploration outside academia.

  • On September 18, 2023, Jazmine successfully defended her PhD thesis titled ‘Chronic Circadian Disruption Increases Cardiovascular Disease Risk’.
